Growing Georgia Tech’s Social Media Footprint

When I arrived at Georgia Tech we had no centrally managed social media presence for the Institute.   Our staff had divided up social media channels among themselves to “monitor” and occasionally post to – part time.   I presented a business case in my annual budget presentation to the campus leadership to hire our first professional “social media” manager on to my staff (organizationally aligned under the news unit).   We brought our first social media staff person on board in late 2012 and established our first professionally managed social media presence for Georgia Tech as an institution starting with Facebook and Twitter.  We had built the central staff up to three FTEs by the time I left.  We rose from zero to one of the top social media programs in higher education as ranked by external surveys/rankings.
